Walter Swennen, painter, philosopher and poet, born in Brussels 1946 is one of the most notable artists on the Belgian contemporary art landscape.
His artistic activities began in the 1960s alongside Marcel Broodthaers, creating objects in the pop art style and participating in numerous happenings. His own particular style, a kind of short circuit between popular culture and historic painting, an iconoclastic tone and disconcerting humour materializes on the various media (found objects, recovered wood panels, stove lids etc.). Language is another fundamental element of his practise : using Flemish, French, German and English, unavoidable words, to accompany paintings and innumerable drawings.
Walter Swennen's artistic production is difficult to define, but it is unique. His works operate in relation to memory and to our shared imagination, while also dealing with the artistic definition of painting.
For Walter Swennen, this is a painting of "diversion," a diversion of meaning through the operation of words and images:
"An insidious undermining, in which we find it difficult to distinguish the ironic from the serious. The viewer has no choice but to take into account the visible, legible elements of the painting, never losing sight of the fact that there is a dualist system at work, in which front and back play hide-and-seek, where top and bottom, like the well-known relationship between form and the substance, permanently collide." Walter Swennen, peintre, philosophe et poète né à Bruxelles en 1946 est un des artistes les plus marquants du paysage artistique belge contemporain.
Son activité artistique débute dans les années 60 en cotôyant Marcel Broodthaers, créant des objets dans le style pop art et participant à de nombreux happenings. Son style particulier, sorte de court circuit entre culture populaire et grande peinture, au ton iconoclaste et à l’humour déroutant, se matérialise sur des supports les plus divers (objets trouvés, panneaux de bois récupérés, couvercles de gazinière etc). Le langage est un autre élément fondateur de sa pratique : usant du flamand, du français, de l’allemand et de l’anglais, les mots, incontournables, accompagnent peintures et innombrables dessins.
La production artistique de Walter Swennen, complexe à définir, est unique. Ses œuvres en relation avec la mémoire et l’imaginaire collectif traitent également de la pratique artistique dans la peinture.
Pour lui, il s’agit de peinture du « détournement », détournement du sens à travers les images et les mots.
« Travail de sape insidieux où l’on a du mal à départager la part de l’ironie de celle du sérieux. Le regardeur n’a alors pas d’autre choix que de prendre en compte les données visibles et lisibles du tableau, en ne perdant jamais de vue qu’il y a là un système dualiste où l’envers et l’endroit jouent à cache-cache, comme le dessus et le dessous – ce fameux rapport du fond et de la forme – se télescopent de façon permanente. » (Maïten Bouisset)
