Walter Swennen : 'So Far So Good'. A retrospective exhibition curated by Dirk Snauwaert.
WIELS presents a retrospective exhibition of the work of Belgian artist Walter Swennen (° 1946, Forest / Brussels). The selection of works being shown at WIELS ranges from the early ‘written paintings', or ‘painted writings’, and the paintings produced around the time of his official ‘start’ as a painter in the early 1980s, and brings the story up to date with a group of his most recent works. In total, some 130 paintings and drawings have been selected.
Swennen is a known unknown. He received several prizes and was honoured in 2007 for the best national exhibition of the year. Nevertheless, Swennen remains relatively unknown to the wider public. His work is unpredictably, experimentally versatile, and full of humour. His stylistic eclecticism always seems to escape the viewer. WIELS aims to increase awareness of Walter Swennen’s work and to accord it the attention it merits.
A comprehensive publication, published by WIELS and (SIC), accompanies the exhibition.
WIELS présente une rétrospective de l'artiste belge Walter Swennen (né en 1946 à Forest / Bruxelles). La sélection faite par WIELS commence par les peintures 'écrites' ou 'écrits peints' et par celles qui marquent le 'début' de Swennen en tant que peintre au début des années 80, et s'étend jusqu'à son travail le plus récent. Au total environ 130 œuvres - des peintures mais aussi des dessins - seront exposées.
Swennen est un connu inconnu. Il a été récompensé d'un prix de la Communauté flamande en 2003, et une de ses expositions de 2007 a été désignée comme "meilleure exposition nationale de l'année". Mais Swennen reste peu connu du grand public. Son travail est imprévisible, multifacettes, expérimental et plein d'humour. Son éclectisme stylistique semble sans cesse échapper au visiteur. WIELS souhaite attirer l’attention du public sur cette œuvre et lui porter l’appréciation qu’elle mérite.
Une publication étoffée, éditée par WIELS et (SIC), accompagne l’exposition.
WIELS presenteert een overzicht van het werk van de Belgische kunstenaar Walter Swennen (°1946, Vorst / Brussel). De selectie van werken in WIELS loopt vanaf de ‘geschreven schilderijen' of ‘geschilderde geschriften’ en zijn officiële ‘aanvang’ als schilder van begin jaren ‘80 tot en met zijn huidige werk. In totaal zullen zo’n 130 werken te zien zijn, zowel schilderijen als tekeningen.
Swennen is een bekende onbekende. Hij kreeg de Kunstenaarsprijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap in 2003 en werd in 2007 gelauwerd voor de beste nationale tentoonstelling van het jaar. Tegelijk is Swennen niet echt bekend bij het grote publiek. Zijn werk is onvoorspelbaar, experimenteel veelzijdig en vol humor. Zijn stilistisch eclecticisme lijkt de toeschouwer steeds weer te ontsnappen. WIELS wenst zijn oeuvre eindelijk de publieke aandacht en de waardering te geven die het verdient.
